Dorothy Jane Kerr was born 16 October 1911 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. She married first on 30 July 1933, Phillip Roberts. They were subsequently divorced. She married second, Colonel Maxwell Emerson on 1 August 1945. After Col. Emerson's retirement from the army, he taught for several years at Memphis State College.

The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee, February 4, 2001, Final Edition, Page B7: Dorothy Jane Kerr Emerson, 89, of Memphis, homemaker, died of heart failure Thursday at Primacy Health Care & Rehab Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with entombment in Memorial Park Mausoleum. She was a member of Mullins United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Terrace Garden Club and the Story-Tellers of Memphis and past president of the Officers Wives Club of Ludswizburg, Germany, and Fort Sheridan, Ill., and the University of Memphis University Wives Club. Mrs. Emerson, the widow of Col. Maxwell Emerson, leaves a daughter, Lt. Col. June Emerson Dunn of Memphis; a stepson, Maj. David Millet Emerson of Eagle Creek, Ore., six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
