Corona Independent, Monday, December 23, 1946, Page 1, Col. 1: Former Mayor and Pioneer Since 1890 Dies. Funeral on Tuesday Will Honor Arthur B. Tuthill. By C. R. Miller. Death again has invaded this community, further reducing the dwindling ranks of Corona pioneers. Arthur Brewster Tuthill succumbed to pneumonia at his home, 1117 Sheridan street, at 7 o'clock Friday evening, in his 81st year. Born at Joy Prairie, Illinois, July 19, 1866, son of Rev. and Mrs. E. B. Tuthill, he came with them and his younger brother , Edward, to Corona, then South Riverside, in 1890.

Here Over 50 Years. Almost continuously since then his interests and activities have centered in this locality. His education was mostly secured in the public school of San Francisco and Colorado Springs, Colorado, and in Colorado college, then in its infancy.

It was during his residence in Colorado Springs that, as a member of a Boys Exploring Club he shared in the discovery of the now famous Cave in the Winds, near Manitou, Colorado. Among the accomplishments of an active young and young manhood was horsemanship of high quality. Young Tuthill was an expert rider and could handle a six-horse team with professional skill.

Life of Usefulness. Since coming here he has lived a life filled with useful activity much of it of considerable civic significance. His first employment locally was as bookkeeper for the Pacific Clay Manufacturing Co. which then operated a plant here. After 18 years of this occupation he became superintendent of the plant in 1907. In 1906 he was chosen mayor, resigning that office in 1908 to accept the position of superintendent of streets in his home town. After nine years in this position he became superintendent of streets for the city of Riverside. County Road Foreman. The climax of an extended career of public service was a long term as county road foreman for the Corona district, which was terminated by his recent retirement.

In 1895, Arthur Tuthill married Valeria Inez Kelley, sister of Loyal C. Kelley, prominent Riverside attorney, and Mrs. Jessie Chancy of Corona. Two daughters, Dorothy and Marian, were born to them. Mrs. Valeria Tuthill died February 22, 1933, at age 62. On March 16, 1934, Miss Grace Shepherd, daughter of a pioneer settler, became Mrs. A. B. Tuthill. She remains to mourn the passing of her husband.

Members of the bereaved family are Mrs. Day (Dorothy) Jewell of Corona and Mrs. Charles (Marian) Greenwood of Los Angeles, daughters. Granddaughters are Mrs. George Pauley, nee Eileen Jewell, Shirley and Virginia Jewell. His brother, Edward of Magnolia Avenue, Corona, also survives.

Was Accomplished Musician. An accomplished musician, Arthur Tuthill was for many years pianist for the local Masonic lodge and for nearly 20 , sang in the choir of the Congregational church in which he held life-long membership. An irreparable loss has come to this community, especially to the many long-time friends who mourn the passing of one whose cordial manner and ready smile won him friends wherever he lived and worked.

Funeral services will be held in the Bell chapel tomorrow (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. Rev. Daniel Hogan will officiate. Temescal Lodge A.F. & M. will conduct the graveside rites in Sunnyslope cemetery, where interment will take place.
