John was quite a smart man-he went to a private school for two years and was a teacher...He was a State of Ohio Senator, won the nomination in 1816 to the U.S. Congress, but refused to go as he thought his purse (asets) were not large enough. He taught in several states and lectured all over the U.S. Before the Civil War he founded the Blue Bird Seminary and was the founder of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
