"Subsequently of Preston, Ribby-with-Wrea and Kirkham. A linen-merchant and woollen-draper, he opened a shop in Market-Place, Preston, 21 March 1746/7. He moved to Ribby, May 1766 and from Ribby to Kirkham, 29 July, 1774. In 1753, together with his brother, Hugh, and sister-in-law, Margaret, and also his father, Robert Hornby, he was in possession of the manor of Ribby. He purchased the capital messuage of Compton-in-Ribby from Townley Rigby, Exq., and in 1787 sold Compton to his nephew, Joseph Hornby, Esq., (q.v.)"
