Educated at Winchester and New Coll., Oxford; despatch rider in South Africa, 1899-1900; joined Milner's "kindergarten" as treasurer, Johannesburg, 1901, and Transvaal, 1902-07, and inter-colonial council; rebuilt and rehabilitated Cammel Laird & Co. as Chairman, 1910-40; Director, L.M.S. Railway; Member, Carnegie Trust; died as a result of enemy action."
