Moved to Iowa in 1850 with brothers-in-law, Josiah Wheelis and Thomas Ramsey on a flat boat which they built and launched themselves on Powells River in Lee County, VA. They drifted down the stream into the Clinch and on into the Tennessee. they stayed on that until they got to Paducah, KY. Here they sold their flatboat and took passage on a steamboat up the Mississippi to Alexander, MO. then they took wagons and drove overland to Drakesville, Davis County, Iowa sixty miles away where they established homes.
