Stephen Samuel Clucas

( - )

Stephen was christened in the Methodist Chapel at St. Marks a couple of miles from his parents home at Ballamoda Beg in Malew Parish, Isle of Man. He did not get along well with his father and left home without acquiring a university education as his brothers had done and as his father wanted him to do. He moved to Liverpool at the age of 25. (Source of age moving to Liverpool ?)

With the initials S.S. on his brass door plate, he was nicknamed Steam Ship Clucas by the neighbour's children. His large stature contributed to the nickname. He was formally called Squire Clucas.

He is listed as a "Confectioner and Baker" on his marriage certificate and as "Master Provisioner" on the marriage certificate of his daughter Gwladys. With a family of 7 daughters, the family life was likened to "The Barretts of Wimpole Street." (The life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning). He was overprotective of his daughters and did not want them to marry. In particular he strongly opposed the marriage of his daughter Mae to her cousin Lance Clucas".

He was much beloved by his wife as indicted in a letter to her grandson Donald Clucas of Durban South Africa.
He was buried in West Derby Cemetery, Section 7, Grave #522. Inscription on the stone:

In loving memory of my hear husband Stephen Samuel Clucas who died 26th of January 1928, aged 68 years. "Till we meet at Jesus feet"
