James Henry "Jim" Charbonneau
( - )
"From Pauline Charbonneau's booklet (related to Pauline by Grace in 1994)"
James Henry "Jim" Charbonneau was born in Plantagenet, Ontario, on April 28, 1989, the son of Joseph Charbonneau and Philomene Blondin. James was the ninth of a family of eleven, who are: Wilmer, Wallace, Wilfrid, Richard Regis, Elida "Lida", Flora, Stella, Lucina, James, Laurentine and Gloria. Gloria is at this time the only survivor.
Elizabeth Ann Galloway was born in Haliburton, Ontario on July 2, 1903, the daughter of John Galloway and Flora Drinkill. The name Grace was added when she was baptized in the Catholic Church. Grace was the youngest of five children: Mary Jane, John David, Dorinda "Doris", and Alice.
Grace and James were married in Iroquois Falls, Ontario on January 14, 1919. They settled in Haileybury, Ontario, where were born the first four children. James was a salesman and a volunteer fireman.
At the time of the fire, in October 1922, which destroyed the greater part of the city of Haileybury, the young couple had already lost their first child, Geraldine, sixteen months old. Their second child, Gerald, was then four months old. After the fire, they took shelter with some friends in North Temiscamingue, Ontario, until their house was rebuilt. Two other children were born there, Geraldine and Theophile.
Because of a transfer of work, Jim and Grace relocated in LaSarre, Quebec. Three girls were born there: Therese, Dorothee and Rosaline. Grace did not speak French at that time.
Because work was scarce, during the Depression years, Jim and Grace moved to Rouyn Quebec, where their last six children were born: Wilmer, Aurele, Pauline, Guy, Richard and Michel. James was still a salesman.
In 1946, James was named Sheriff and Inspector of the "Comite Paritaire" until 1963. He was also very involved in the Municipal Politics. He was Alderman of District #4 in Rouyn during eight years. He served two terms as Alderman; the first time in February 1942. In 1946 he was reelected by acclamation. He ran for mayor in 1950 but was not elected.
James, with the help of a good friend, Jim Giroux, started the Association of the Knights of Columbus in Rouyn. He had been initiated in Ottawa during his honeymoon. James was Grand Knight for many years. After two years of hard work and organization, a group of Catholic men from Rouyn, succeeded in obtaining the promise of a charter, under the direction of Mr. James Henry Charbonneau, Grand Knight of the Council in LaSarre.
