William "I" Clucas

( - )

William was a bonesetter, highly regarded on the IOM; they were the forerunner of surgeons who mended dislocated and broken bones. (KA)

From "Manx Worthies" by A.W. Moore

"The best known of bonesetters is that of Clucas, of Strang, in Braddan. The first of the Clucases of whom we hear anything was William (b: 1782; d: 1832). An obituary notice of him declares his 'services as a bonesetter, etc., which he practised for so many years with great success, will long be remembered by the inhabitants of this island.' The same profession was carried on by his son and grandson."

Extract from the Manx Advertiser dated 18th September 1832
"William Clucas (First Bonesetter)
On Sunday last at Strang, near this town, of paralysis, much respected Mr. William Clucas died, aged 50 years. Mr. Clucas' services as a bonesetter, etc., which he practised for many years with great success, will long be remembered by the inhabitants of this island."
