Major General Lionel Charles Manners-Smith C. B. E.
(1898 - 29 Jul 1975)
one-time of Ipswitch, Suffolk, subsequently of Cranford, Worlington, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Educated at Eastbourne College and R.M.A.; served in Gt. War, 1916-18, with R.A. (despatches); in N.W.F. India, 1922-23; and in 2nd. World War in N.W. Europe, 1944 (despatches), and in S.E.A.C., 1945. He became Brevet Lt. Col., 1939; Col., 1942; Brigadier, 1947; Acting Major-Gen., 1946; and Temp. Major-Gen., 1947. He was Director of Tactical Investigations, War Office, 1946; Chief of British C-inC's mission to Soviet Forces of Occupation in Germany, 1947; and retired in 1948. He became Hon. Fellow, Woodard Corpn. (Midland Div.), 1950, (retired 1970); was Dioc. Sec., St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich, 1954-68; and a Lay Canon, St. Edmunds Cathedral, 1970.
