Educated at King's College School and at King's College, Cambridge; called to the Bar (Middle Temple) in 1910; was a director of a Colliery and other companies; served in the Great War, 1914-19, in Sudan and Gallipoli (Lieut., 7th. Manchester Regt., 1913); served as Lt. Cmdr., R.N.V.R., in Atlantic, 1941-42, in North African assault, 1942; was on staff of C-in-C in Mediterranean, 1942-43; served in the assault on Normandy, 1944; was Chairman, Disablement Advisory Cttee., Isle of Wight, 1945; became a D.L. (Lincs.) in 1959.
