Entered firm of W.H. Smith & Son, 1892. Partner, 1894. Extended printing business and initiated bookbinding dept. High Sheriff of Co. of London, 1906. Started own private printing press -- the Ashendene Press -- and published 40 major works between 1895 and 1935. Collector of mediaeval and renaissance MSS, and printed books. Joint Lord of the Manor of Ingleton, Yorks. Trustee of the Wallace Collection, 1933-46. Prime Warden, Goldsmith's Co., 1934. Trustee of the British Museum, 1936-46.
