Marriage
On the church marriage record, where it list the Contracting Parties, in the middle of Dorothea Palermo it says "her mark". Indicating she could not write.Here is a woman in 1913 at the age of 23 and unable to write - why can't she ?
To add to the confusion the 1920 census question 17 asked whether you could read and question 18 asked if you could write - "YES" is written next to both.
