Peter Imel

(30 Mar 1764 - 3 Jan 1849)

Peter Imel was one of the Hessians. When Peter and several of his brothers came over to America, he was only 12 years old. Peter, and his brothers, deserted from the Hessians and joined forces with the Colonists. He was a drummer with General Morgan's Virginia Riflemen and fought the Revolutionary War against those that had hired him and sent him over.
After the war, he settled in Virginia, married and had 13 children. He married Susanna Pul in Frederick, MD on August 12, 1787 at the Evangelist Lutheran Church. He relocated his family to Indiana sometime between 1810-1820. In 1820, the family was living in Wayne County, Indiana. Peter Imel and his family would have been the first Imels in Indiana. It is believed that his son George moved to Johnson County and Peter was living with his son, George, just prior to his death.Peter's son, George was a soldier in the War of 1812.Peter Imel died in the home of his son, George, near Fairland and was buried in the family plot on George's farm. In 1940, three of his great-grandsons moved Peter's body to this cemetery, six miles away from its original resting place. He was buried in a grave with his son, George. There are actually five bodies in this one grave. Legend has it that when they searched for all the bodies, they could only find a few bones. So, all five bodies were probably buried in this one grave.
