John CUNNINGHAM

(1871 - Feb 1907)

After his parents' death John ran the family farm in Greely Kansas. He drowned in the Smoky river on the family farm in February 1907 aged 36. He and his brothers Dan and James had earlier crossed the iced-up river, using a split log as a bridge, to husk corn on the other side. After some time Dan and James crossed back to do other chores while John worked on until dusk. When he failed to return, family and neighbours began a search. They found a large hole in the ice near the log bridge and found John's body in the water. It was believed John fell from the log and hit his head on the ice as there was a gash on his face. He was of strong build and a good swimmer and it was thought he would have survived had he been conscious. He was unmarried.
