Cox trained as a medical doctor and possibly worked at the Longford Infirmirary for a time before emigrating to New Zealand where he worked as a chemist. He lived in Wellington, New Zealand for about 30 years before returning to Ireland. It appears his New Zealand-born wife, Nellie, did not move with him to Ireland; she may have died prior to his return.
