Mortimer HUDSON
(Abt 4 Jan 1838 - 28 Mar 1884)
Mortimer's baptismal sponsor was Margaret Dillane. As Mortimer was an unusual name in the Hudson family, it is likely that it was a traditional name on Mortimer's mother's side, i.e. in the Galvin family, as I have seen several Mortimer Galvins from north Kerry in 19th century documents/transcripts.
From Bill Hudson's work 'The Hudsons of Ballyeagh', we learn that "Mortimer's father shared a little over 4 acres with two other men. Seemingly he died when Mortimer was in his teens and his widowed mother and unmarried children went to live with various relatives and friends. Mortimer Hudson apparently remained in the area with his older sister, Mrs Ellen Mahony, and her husband, Synan Mahony, of the neighboring townland of Killehenny. Presumably he remained with the Mahonys until his brother-in-law's death [which occurred sometime before 1873]. In 1874 an Edmund Mahony became the responsible taxpayer of the Mahonys' Killehenny house. The change might have resulted in Mortimer moving to the neighboring townland of Ballybunion."
After his marriage to Kate, the couple started up a drapery business located at 24 Church St., Listowel, Co. Kerry. Kate continued to run the business following
Mortimer's death from epilepsy in 1884 at the age of 46.
