Individual Details

John B. CUNNINGHAM

(Abt 7 Jul 1859 - 17 Jul 1885)

John, who grew up in Kansas City, was ordained a priest in June 1885 in the American College in Louvain, Belgium. Shortly after his ordination he travelled from Louvain to Kerry to visit his grandfather, John Cunningham who appears to have been living at the time with relatives John and Bessie Troy in Listowel. On his arrival in Listowel he became seriously ill and died about two weeks later of tuberculosis, aged just 26, at John and Bessie's home. It is not known how exactly the Troys were connected to John.

John's headstone in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane reads:

Erected to the memory of Rev. John B. Cunningham, born Abbeydorney, Kerry, July 1859
Ordained Louvain, Belgium 1885
Erected by his parents, Bryan and Margaret Cunningham of Kansas City, Mo. U.S.A.
