'unknown' JONES
(ABOUT 1760S - )
It is likely Unknown was from Co. Kerry. He was the father of Kerry-born Catherine Jones, a 3rd great-grandmother of my husband, Joe Gordon (we know her county of birth from the 1851 census of England).
Joe has been DNA-matched by Ancestry with descendants of a number of members of a Jones family from Kielduff, Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry, which ties in with Catherine's Kerry connection. However, the Ballymacelligott Joneses were Protestant, whereas Catherine was Catholic. Did she convert when she married Catholic Michael Devine? Or is the DNA match through another family? For now I am positioning Catherine as a brother of John Jones (c.1795-1880) of Kielduff.
It is possible Unknown's name was Robert as Robert was the name of the father of Catherine's putative sister Elizabeth. It is surprising, however, that the name Robert does not appear among the names of his descendants, especially among his grandchildren that I have recorded here (Irish custom at the time was to name the first-born son after the paternal grandfather).
Due to all the above uncertainty, I have added cautions below regarding the relationship between Catherine and her possible siblings. However, there appears little doubt that Catherine had a blood connection to the Jones family of Kielduff, Ballymacelligott.
The Jones surname in Ireland comes from settlers who came from Britain especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. The name is common throughout Ireland.
