Bernard (Barney) HARGADEN

The following piece, which appears to relate to Barney above, appeared in the Irish Examiner of 14 July 1972. It is part of an article on a Golden Jubilee celebration of the Garda Siochana (Irish police force), which many retired members of the force attended, including Barney.

"BARNEY HARGADEN. Born in Co. Sligo, joined the Force in November 1922, at Dublin Castle. Trained at Collinstown, McKee Barracks and Phoenix Park Depot. His first station was Fermoy, Co. Cork, to which he transferred on February 22nd 1923. He went to St. Nicholas station, South Terrace, Cork in May 1929, a station which closed in July of that year. He then went to Barrack Strret station, Cork and in 1930 transferred to Youghal. Came to Lower Road station, Cork in 1931, a station which was closed in 1953. Barney, as he is known, then went to McCurtain station in Cork City, where he served until April 6th 1961, where he retired on reaching the age limit. Barney served in the IRA from 1917 until 1921 and held the rank of captain."
