Julia, known as Sheila, was named after her paternal grandmother, Julia O'Sullivan (née Doody). She became a nun, joining the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition and lived in France for several years before leaving the convent. She subsequently trained as a nurse in England, where she met her future husband, Dinny, who was from Cashel, Co. Tipperary. She and Dinny lived with their family in Patrick's Rock, Cashel before moving to Boscabell, just outside the town.
