Individual Details

Michael JOHNSTON

(Abt 1840 - Aft 2 Apr 1911)

Michael's county of birth is given as Carlow in the 1901 census and Kildare in the 1911 census. According to family lore the Johnstons were a Church of Ireland family. However, Michael describes himself as Roman Catholic in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Could it be that Michael converted to Catholicism when he married his Catholic wife, Elizabeth?

Michael, who lived at 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines, Dublin, worked as a gardener. He may also have owned or managed properties in Dublin as the following advertisements indicate:

From The Irish Times of 16 July 1895: "To Let for Grazing, for the season, four statute acres at Sunbury Gardens, Rathmines. Apply Mr M Johnston, 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines or at 36 College Green." and

From The Freeman's Journal of 11 May 1899: "To Let Four Roomed Cottage, North Strand, Dublin, large garden, new sewerage; 8s 6d weekly. Apply M Johnston, 3 Ontario Terrace, Rathmines."

A Michael Johnston died in the registration district of Dublin South in the third quarter of 1929 aged 90 (giving an estimated birth year of 1839). It is possible that this is our Michael above.
