Patrick MULVIHILL

(Abt 1800 - Abt 1862)

Patrick farmed in the townland of Tullamore in the civil parish of Galey). Tullamore is a relatively large townland (1,902 acres), and the area where the original Mulvihill farm was situated is known locally as Shronowen (also spelled Shronown, Shronoun, Shroneon, etc.). The Mulvihill farm is on the right bank of the river Galey at the point where it takes a sharpish turn to the south-west as it makes its way towards the river Feale. Around 1860 it would have comprised about 175 acres.

I am wondering if Patrick was connected to a William Mulvihill of Tullamore whose father settled there around 1820 (from where we do not know). We know of William's existence from an account in the Nation newspaper of 31 October 1868 of the recent eviction of William's widow and their 12-year-old daughter, despite their rent having been paid. William had died about a year earlier. We are also told the land that William's father had leased in Tullamore was essentially bog but with great effort on his and William's part, they managed to cultivate it. "Those who witnessed [William's] labours say that the great hardships to which he subjected himself brought him to an untimely end". A death record has been located on the Irish Genealogy website for a William Mulvihill who died aged 50 in 1867 in the Listowel registration district. Unfortunately no further information is available but this may have been William mentioned above.

As extant baptism records for Ballybunion parish (where Patrick's children were baptised), begin in 1832, the dates of birth for the first six of his children cannot be determined with any degree of accuracy, nor can we be certain of the sequence of their births. However, it may be assumed that Edmund was the eldest of the boys since he was named after the paternal grandfather (following the tradition at the time). It may also be assumed that Johanna Buckley’s father was John Buckley since the second boy was named John (again, this was the tradition). Normally the third boy would have been named Patrick, after the father. The fact he was named Jeremiah may indicate that Patrick’s brother Jeremiah had died by 1832 and Patrick's son born in 1932 was named after him as a mark of respect. It is almost certain that Mary was the oldest of the girls. That she was married in 1847 would imply that she may have been born around 1825. According to her death record of Catherine, she was 86 when she died. so we may assume that she was born around 1826. No baptism record has been found for the younger Mary. There is a gap in the Ballybunion church records around 1851. So it is possible she was born and baptised then. According to her death record she was 52, which would make her birth year 1853 or 1854.
