Martin met Kathleen on a visit to Ireland in 1955, possibly in Duncannon, Co. Wexford. Kathleen, whose husband had recently died, was from Ballyhack, Co. Wexford, not far from Duncannon, but was living in Liverpool (at 36 Porchester Road) at the time she met Martin. She and her first husband, Howard Kennedy, had a daughter, also named Kathleen who would have been about 21 years old at the time.
Martin returned to New York after his visit to Ireland and travelled to Liverpool a year later to marry Kathleen. After the marriage Kathleen and her daughter moved to New York. Martin and Kathleen later separated not long afterwards.
