Dermot MULVIHILL (caution: not verified)

( - )

Note from Helen: Although Dermot is not blood-related to me or my husband, I came across the information below in the course of my research into the family of my great-great-great-aunt Biddy Cunningham of Kilbaha, Moyvane who married Moyvane-born John Mulvihill in 1861. Although probably from the same parish, John does not appear to be related to Dermot but the information below on Dermot and his probable descendants may be useful to other Mulvihill researchers with an interest in Moyvane.

Another family of interest to researchers may be that of Timothy Mulvihill from Kilbaha, located adjacent to Gortdromasillihy where the descendants of Dermot above lived. Timothy, who was born about 1780, married Johanna Connors and they had eight children, all born in Kilbaha between 1820 and 1844: Thomas, Catherine, John, Bridget, Johanna, Timothy, Michael and Anna. The entire family emigrated to the United States about 1862 and settled in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Mulvihills of north Kerry may have originally come from Knockanira, Co. Clare. I have read that in the 17th century, the O’Briens, who were lords of Co. Clare and owners of land in the Tarbert area of Co. Kerry, settled many Clare families in north Kerry, including a Mulvihill family, who became known as the Black Mulvihills. Apparently this resettlement scheme caused resentment among many local north Kerry families, leading to a spate of faction fighting during the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. Assailants typically used stones and blackthorn sticks, often causing serious injury or death. The Black Mulvihills were allies of another settler family by the name of Lawlor, their main adversaries being a group called the Cooleens.
