Individual Details
William Charles Mark (Charles) KENT
(1823 - 1902)
William, who was known as Charles, qualified as a barrister but went on to become a journalist, editor and poet, editing the Sun newspaper from 1845 to 1870. He was a good friend of Charles Dickens and a lock of Dickens's hair has been passed down through the family of Charles's son Harold. It is apparently still in the possession of a family member.
Both Charles's father and his grandfather William Kent were naval officers. Apparently the Kent Group of islands in Bass Strait, Australia (between Tasmania and the mainland) is named after his grandfather.
