Individual Details
James (Jimmy) Hugh MURPHY
(7 Jul 1871 - 7 Dec 1897)
Jimmy was a talented boxer with a very promising future in the sport when, during a sparring fight in Johannesburg in 1897, he wiped a cut near his eye with a handkerchief, resulting in blood poisoning which caused him to lose his eye. He died within the year aged only 26 (although his headstone gives his age at death as 25).
