Individual Details

John MOYNIHAN

(1 May 1884 - 9 Jun 1943)

We have John's place of birth from the ship manifest from the voyage he and his wife, Alice, and their daughter, Harriet, made when emigrating to the United States in 1927 which gives his birthplace as Gullane, Co. Kerry. I therefore believe John was the John Moynihan born on 1 May 1884 in Gullane, Gneeveguilla, Co. Kerry (from www.irishgenealogy.ie).

Prior to emigration John was a
police inspector in the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary). We do not know where he and Alice had met but his address at the time of his marriage (1914) was Rosbercon, New Ross, Co. Wexford, and at the time of the birth of his daughter, Harriet (1915), he appears to have been stationed in Ennistymon, Co. Clare. John had retired from the RIC by he time he emigrated. as he is described as a pensioner on the ship manifest, which also gives the family's last permanent residence as Duncannon, Co. Wexford.

It is not known how long John and his famly spent in the U.S. but they all returned at some point and settled in Killarney, Co. Kerry. I have unable to find them in any U.S. census so it is possible they were back in Ireland by the time of the 1930 census.
