Individual Details
Bridget RELIHAN
(Abt 1856 - 13 Dec 1931)
According to the 1911 census, Bridget and Jim had 11 children born alive, 10 of whom were alive at the time of the census. It is known that one of their sons emigrated to Australia and that two more sons became Presentation brothers.
An obituary for an Elizabeth Dower (née Relihan) of Woodford, Listowel in The Kerryman newspaper of 2 January 1932 appears to be actually that of Bridget. According to the obituary the chief mourners at Elizabeth's funeral were sons Patrick Dower, Rathoran; Br. Boniface, Presentation Brothers, Kent [later of Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, died 24 January 1958]; Br. Eugenius, Presentation Brothers, Cobh [died 29 July 1954, aged 57]; also Mrs. William Dillon and Mrs. James Kennelly, Knockanure (daughters), Thomas Relihan and Michael Relihan (brothers) and Mrs. Enright (sister). We are also told that a message of sympathy was recieved from a "Rev. Matthew Daly (nephew), Manchester" (which may in fact mean her nephew Fr. Mort Daly), and that "as Secretary of the North Kerry branch of the Land League", Elizabeth/Bridget "took an active part in helping to exterminate whatever that was left of landlordism in the district".
