Individual Details
Denis MCENERY
(Abt 21 Sep 1882 - 19 Jun 1938)
Sponsors at Denis's baptism were Philip Bourke and Johanna McEnery.
I had been under the impression that Denis emigrated to the United States as he arrived in New York on 16 May 1903 (the contact name on the ship manifest being his sister Hannah) and on 9 May 1908 (the contact name this time being his brother John). However, it appears that Denis was either just visting his family in New York in 1903 and 1908 or lived in New York from 1903 before returning home to marry in 1904. Given the gap between the dates of birth of his first and second children it appears Denis may have gone back to work in the U.S. following his marriage, returning home for a visit in 1908 and returning home for good around 1909. The family initially lived in Tarmon Hill, Tarbert, Co. Kerry (perhaps in Ciss's family home?) before settling in Tubbertureen where Denis ran a farm. This farm was presumably the 76-acre property that Denis's brother Edmund sold around 1910 (the farm was sold to a Denis McEnery, surely Denis above). The 1911 census of Ireland shows Denis living in Tubbertureen with his wife, Ciss and three children, along with Ciss's mother and a boarder named Edmund McEnery, presumably his brother Edmund.
Denis died of tuberculosis aged 55.
