William (Willie) Henry HANRAHAN

(22 Sep 1900 - 8 Dec 1979)

After leaving school, Willie served an apprenticeship in engineering at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast. However, according to a newpaper account of his retirement as a primary school teacher in 1969, he fled Belfast after "he was beaten up and expelled in the anti-Catholic progrom of 1920".

After leaving Belfast, Willie worked for a couple of years as an engineer in Tuam, Co. Galway and Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, installing an electricity supply into these areas. He then decided to become a primary school teacher and begain his training in Dublin in 1922. After qualifying, he worked in Dublin for five years before moving back to Co. Galway where he spent 14 years as principal of Garra National School and then 26 years as principal of Barnaderg National School. Willie lived in Barnaderg but around 1976, three years before his death, he moved to Newcastle in Galway to live with his sister Lou. He never married.
