According to the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary, Thomas was a farm servant.
On the marriage certificate of Thomas's daughter Mary (1898), his name is listed as Thomas. However, on Mary's death certificate (1917) his name is given as John. Also, on Mary's marriage certificate her mother's name appears as Ann, yet is given as Mary on her death certificate. I am inclined to think the marriage certificate is more accurate than the death certificate in this case as I believe more attention might normally be paid to parents' names on a marriage certificate.
