Tony attended St Joseph's College, Garbally Park, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, as did his father and brother, Paddy. He then studied science at University College Dublin and, after graduating with a first class honours degree, went to work as an engineer with ICI in Warrington, Lancashire. He returned to Ireland in 1961 and joined the Irish Sugar Company in Carlow. He worked for Irish Sugar for 44 years before retiring in 1995 as operations director of all four sugar factories in Ireland. He and his family lived in Carlow.
