Thomas was ordained a priest in the Holy Ghost order in 1952 and was sent to Nigeria to take up the post of pastor in the diocese of Owerri. He spent 16 years in Nigeria until the civil war in Biafra erupted. He was one of about 200 missionaries who were expelled from the country at that time.

Thomas was then sent to Jacksonville, Florida where he was appointed associate pastor of Assumption parish there. In December 1968 he was assigned to the diocese of St. Augustine and in 1972 he was appointed pastor at St. Patrick's parish church in Jacksonville. He became pastor of Epiphany parish in Lake City in 1977 where he was responsible for the mission churches of St. Francis Xavier in Live Oak and St. Therese of the Child Jesus in Jasper. In 1985 he was appointed pastor of St. William parish in Keystone Heights where he served until his death (of a heart attack).
