Mary and James met in London where they were both employed in the pub trade. Early in their marriage they ran a pub in Finsbury Park and later moved on to the Goldhawk in Shepherd's Bush. Then they ran the Essex Serpent in Covent Garden and later the Belsize Tavern in Belsize Park. Their last pub prior to retirement was The Pineapple in Kentish Town.
Mary's two sisters and their husbands were publicans too: Peggy and her husband, Joe McManus, had a pub in the City, and Kitty and her husband, Martin Sweeney, also ran a pub in London.
