Individual Details
Harold LOWEY
(19 Sep 1897 - 24 Nov 1941)
According to one family source, Harold was of Manx origin, but another member of the family has told me that, while the Lowey name is common in the Isle of Man, Harold's great-grandfather Richard Lowey may have come from Kilcoo in Co. Down. Richard later settled in Merseyside and married in Liverpool in 1820.
Harold was a naval officer. After his marriage he and his wife, Maude, lived for a time in Malta, where he was stationed, before returning to England where he and Maude lived at 255 Chatsworth Avenue, Cosham, Portsmouth.
Harold was killed when his ship, HMS Dunedin, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the South Atlantic during World War II. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial (panel 45, column 3).
