Thomas RYAN (caution: not verified)

( - )

I belive that Thomas and his wife, Bridget (née Healy), were the parents of Loughlin Ryan, a great-great-grandfather of my husband, Joe Gordon, because a baptism record has been located for a Loughlin Ryan, son of Thomas Ryan and Bridget Healy, who was baptised in Leighbridge on 25 March 1822. For various reasons (see my notes on Loughlin). I believe this Loughlin was Joe's great-great-grandfather but because I have no proof, I have added a caution beside the names of Thomas and Bridget.

Ryan is one of the most common surnames in Ireland. The vast majority of Ryans today are descended from the family of 'Ó Maoilriagháin', meaning 'descendant of a devotee of St. Riaghan'. In Co. Carlow and adjoining areas, Ryan may also derive from 'Ó Riagháin'. From their origin in the barony of Idrone in Co. Carlow, the Ó Riagháins spread widely into the adjoining counties of Wexford and Kilkenny.
