Michael's age on his death certificate indicates he was born around 1825. However a baptism record dated 19 December 1821 has been located for a Michael Hanley, son of Michael Hanley and Ellen Lonergan. Either Michael's age on his death certificate is incorrect or his parents had a second child named Michael around 1825, the first Michael having died.

In 1854 Michael, Johanna and their baby son, also named Michael, emigrated to Australia, where four more children were born.

Michael died of head injuries following a fall from a horse. His age on his death certificate is 35 but, as mentioned above, he may have been around four years older. Johanna later remarried (to John Dwyer) and had another family.
