Accordng to MacLysaght's 'The Surnames of Ireland, the Hand surname - and presumably the Hands surname also - is "an English name used, by pseudo-translation, for Claffey, McClave, Glavy and Lavin, through confusion with the [Irish] word lámh, [meaning] hand".
