According to Frank Hanley's article 'An Echo from the Past' on www.limerick.ie, Nellie suffered from poor health as a child and and she was unable to complete her secondary education at the Loretto Convent school in Killarney, Co. Kerry, where she was boarding. It is not known if her sister, Nora attended the same school. Like Nora, Nellie emigrated to the United States where she married Mick Griffin. Following Mick's premature death, Nellie returned to Ireland where she remarried and had a son, Pat (Fogarty).
