Mardy was the youngest of eight children. He died aged 43 of tubercular nephritis and cardiac failure. This left his six young children orphaned as his wife, Mai, had died just three years earlier. Before Mardy's death one child had already been taken into the care of Mardy's sister Mary and her husband, Johnny Gordon, who had no children of their own. After Mardy died, Mary and Johnny took in the remaining children, with the exception of the youngest, a baby, who was sent to another aunt (name unknown), who lived in Northern Ireland.
