Maurice took over the family horse-breeding business following the death of his father, Richard. Maurice then decided to move the stud to Texas but "the change of climate ill-suited the horses", according to a piece in the Kerryman of 24 September 1938, "and the enterprise was a costly failure. Worse than all, in about the year 1909, Maurice and his wife and entire family of six were swept away in a terrific Gulf storm".
