Individual Details
Johanna MCCOY
( - 1811)
Unfortunately we have no further informataion on Johanna or the McCoy family, although it is likely the McCoys were from the Athea area of Co. Limerick seeing that Johanna's husband was from Athea and they raised a family there. In his book 'The Surnames of Ireland' [1985], Edward MacLysaght tells us the McCoy surname is "one of the several anglicised forms of Mac Aodha (son of Hugh). He cites Rev. Patrick Woulfe, author of 'Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall: Irish names and surnames' [1923] who maintained the McCoy surname was "almost peculiar to Co. Limerick". This ties in nicely with the theory that our McCoys were from LImerick. However, MacLysaght goes on to disagree with Woulfe, stating that the name is found mainly in North Ulster, where it is associated with gallowglass families (descendants of Norse-Gaelic mercenaries from Scotland).
