Patrick SHANAHAN

(Abt 1880 - 15 Jul 1943)

It is possible Patrick above was the Patrick Shanahan born on 1 April 1880 in Ballylahive, Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry to Patrick Shanahan and Johanna McCarthy. I say this because both Patrick above and his first wife, Margaret, were living in Ballylahive at the time of their marriage in 1912 (a year earlier, at the time of the 1911 census, he had been boarding with a McMahon family in Asdee, Co. Kerry).

Patrick was working as a creamery manager in 1911 and 1912 but when he married his second wife, Kathleen, in 1922 he was described on their marriage certificate as a mechanical engineer. He later worked as a manager in Cannocks Stores in Limerick. He is described as a shopkeeper on his death certificate and on the marriage certificate of his daughter Anne so it appears he left Cannocks at some point and opened up his own shop.

Patrick died in Barrington St. Hospital, Limerick from a "fractured femur and cardiac failure". His age of 60 on his death record (i.e. born about 1883) does not tie in with the approximate year of his birth (1880) calculated from the 1911 census.
