John MULVIHILL

It appears John was incorrectly named as Patrick on his baptism record, or else the name was incorrectly transcribed on the Irish Genealogy website. According to Irish Genealogy, a Patrick Mulvihill, son of Patrick Mulvihill and Mary Walsh of Shronowen, was baptised on 29 June 1883. However civil records tell us that a John Mulvihill was born in Shronowen to the same Patrick and Mary on 25 July 1883. Clearly there was only one son; and he was called John, as evidenced by the name on his death record. As baptism records are more trustworthy than birth records from that time, it appears he was in fact born on or shortly before 29 June 1883. What appears to have happened is that, in order to avoid the fine for late registration of a birth, a later birth date was provided by his father, i.e. 25 July 1883.
John drowned in the Gale river near his home at the age of 10, although his death record tells us he was 11. He had been crossing a temporary footbridge over the river when a dog belonging to his family knocked him into the water.
