Individual Details

Ellen (Eileen) HANRAHAN

(20 Nov 1903 - 16 Dec 1957)

Sponsors at Eileen's baptism were Daniel Shine and Ellen Shine.

Eileen emigrated to the United States just before her 18th birthday, joining her brother Tim in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ellis Island records show that she arrived in New York on 8 November 1921, and that her occupation was a teacher (although it is unlikely she would have had a full teaching qualification by the age of 18). At some point, Eileen was informally adopted by an Edward L. Dunn and his Irish-born wife, Ellen (née Breheny), and henceforth went by the name of Eileen Dunn and lived with them at 4 S. 18th St. in Harrisburg. Edward was born around 1871 and died in Harrisburg in October 1970 aged 99, leaving no surviving relatives. He had worked as a telegrapher for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Harrisburg.

Nellie never married and died at the age of 54, having suffered from breast cancer. She had spent the previous 19 years working as a clerk for the Department of Labor and Industry in Harrisburg.
