Individual Details
Michael John KISSANE
(Abt 1800 - MID-19TH CENTURY)
A Michael Kissane of Kicox, Lisselton, Co. Kerry died aged 84 in Kicox on 22 February 1884, indicating he was born around 1804 (the informant on his death record being his son John., also of Kilcox). I had initially thought this Michael was Michael above who was born around 1800 but Michael farmed in Kilgarvan and died there.
It is, however, likely that the two Michaels are connected so here is a kittle more information about the Michael from Kilcox: his son John, mentioned above, married Catherine Cronin of Dysert, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry on 18 July 1872 in Lixnaw. Her father's name was Michael and he had died by the time she and John married. John was 30 at the time of the marriage and Catherine 20. They had seven children that we know of: Lizzie, Mary, Norah, Patrick, John, Richard and James. James was born in Kilcox on 3 March 1889. He emigrated to Australia in 1911 and joined the Queensland Police Force. In 1915 he took leave from police duty and volunteered in the Australian Imperial Force. In 1917 he was sent to Europe and saw action in France. As a result of an act of gallantry (details unknown), he was awarded the Military Cross in January 1818. He returned to Brisbane and his police job in the following year but resigned after about a year to take up the position of secretary of the Queensland Irish Association, remaining in this role until 1924. He married Mary Agnes O'Driscoll in 1922 and they had three children: John Andrew, Katherine Mary and James Morgan. James later became an insurance inspector and died in Brisbane in 1953.
