After the sudden death of Pat's uncle Ned, Pat's mother, Mary, raised her brother's three orphaned children and worked Ned's farm in Ballygoughlin with the help of her family, especially Pat. During World War II, when fuel was scarce, Pat carried out extensive turf-saving in a bog that adjoined the Stack holding. When Pat married, he purchased or was given Ned's farm.
