Bridget Teresa (Tess) MCDERMOTT

Tess trained as a nurse and worked for a time in the County Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth until about 1916.

In 1917 Tess joined Cumann na mBan, the Irish republican women's paramilitary organisation, and for the next two years worked as a courier between Drogheda and Strokestown. In 1919 she moved back to Strokestown and for the next year or so transferred arms and carried despatches in the area. She also gave first aid lectures to Cumann na mBan groups, raised funds and procured medical supplies. And during the Civil War (1922-1923) she tended the wounded.

After the war Tess, who never married, ran a haberdashery shop in Bridge St., Strokestown and in later life moved to Dublin to live with her niece Teresa (known as Joe) Lawlor at 67 Adair, Sandymount Avenue.
