Ellen (Sr. Agnes) FLYNN

(11 Jan 1860 - 1934)

According to her obituary in The Kerryman newspaper of 12 May 1934, Ellen was a relative of Bishop John Francis Cunningham of Concordia, Kansas. She was not a blood relative, however, being only connected to the bishop and his family through marriage. We are also told Ellen died following eight years of illness. The obituary goes on to say that Ellen had gone to Kansas in 1880 (probably encouraged by Bishop Cunningham who invited many of his relatives to Kansas to enter religious life there); and two years later she joind the Sisters of Charity order. She was primarily a teacher and spent a period of time teaching the children of silver and gold miners in "two [states] in the Rocky Mountain region". She also worked in hospitals and was superioress of St. John's Hospital, Leavenworth, Kansas and St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings, Montana.

A newspaper account from 1932 of Ellen and her sister Sr. Anacleta's Golden Jubilee celebrations mentions "other cousins from Ireland, William and Rodney McAuliffe and Miss Mary McAuliffe". Ellen's mother's maiden name was McAuliffe but I have been unable to determine how exactly these cousins werer connected to Ellen's family. I am also aware of another of Ellen's relatives, a Sr. Mary Felicitas McAuliffe (c.1889-1959) of the Sisters of St. Joseph order in Concordia, who is presumably related to the McAuliffes mentioned above. Her obituary tells us she was born in Salina, Kansas and was survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary Pfab of Atlanta, Georgia (whose son Charles was a Marianist priest) and a brother, William of Kansas City, Kansas. I am told Ellen's family was also connected to the O'Rourke family of Hill House, Abbeyfeale but I have not managed to establish how they might be linked.
